We have reached the part in the school year where things are settling down, and we are mastering our routines. We are still ironing out whole body listening and listening to ALL directions before asking questions.
Walk-a-thon is this Friday! It is a half-a-day, so dismissal will begin at 11:30 am. The last day to bring canned food items, toiletries, and water is Thursday. On Thursday, my friends will bring home their walk-a-thon shirts. Please be sure to have them wear that along with a comfortable pay of shoes. They should also bring a reusable water bottle as we will be outside walking. There will be water stations that pass out water bottles as well. Picture day is October 5, with the rain date being October 6. Students will have their pictures taken outside, and we are asking parents to assist with bringing children down to take their pictures. If you have not already signed up and would like to, please feel free to let us know. If you have not already turned in the picture form, you still have time. The last day to bring in the form is on Monday, October 5. Math: We are wrapping up our second topic. We have a couple more lessons before we move into the reviewing stage of things. The projected date for the test is Thursday, October 8. Please continue to have them work on their 0,1,2,5,9, and 10 facts. Reading: We are moving into a new topic, this one being on communities. We are bridging off our previous topic, traditions. During this unit, we will talk about communities, and how they look and work. We will talk about how people can share their culture in their community. We will read a few autobiographies and discuss how they tie in with our essential questions; “How do people from different cultures contribute to a community?” In writing, we are wrapping up our friendly letter unit. We will move into our new unit next week, which is on paragraphs. We will practice writing paragraphs to prepare us for longer writing projects. Social Studies & Science: We are approaching the end of our first topic. We have a couple more lessons before we start reviewing. Before we review, we will finish our quest project activity on National Parks and the Pinball Machine. Those two projects will go up on the bulletin board before they bring them home. Important Information: Walk-a-thon (October 2) Early Dismissal at 11:30 am. Picture day (October 5) Parent/Teacher conferences (October 8) Early Dismissal at 11:30 am. No School (October 9 & 12)

We are making waves in third grade!
Walk-a-thon will be on October 2, which is next week. It will be a half-a-day with dismissal being at 11:30 a.m. Some friends have already started to bring in canned food items and toiletry items. Continue to bring those in. The kiddos are excited to win and would like to win, again! Please be sure to have them wear comfortable shoes next Friday and bring a reusable water bottle as we will walk just about 3 miles that day. Next Monday and Tuesday, September 28, and September 29, we will finish our map testing. Monday we will take our language usage test and Tuesday we will take our reading map test. On those days, the homework load will be lighter than normal or they may not have any at all. Picture day has been pushed back to October. We are scheduled to take pictures on October 5. If it rains, we will take pictures on October 6. We will take pictures outdoors, and are asking parents to assist with bringing children to have their pictures taken and then brought back to class. You can send the picture form and the money to school as soon as Thursday. The last day to bring it in is October 5. I will send out reminders. Remote Wednesday Notice: This week they will have things to complete in their Wednesday Folder, Savvas, and on Google Classroom. During our sessions, I will show them where to find the independent assignments. Technology: We finally have all of the accounts set up! Yay! So on Monday, they will bring home a sheet that has ALL of their login information. That paper will stay at home, as they will have a copy to keep here at school. That means on Wednesday, I will just include the assignments and schedule for the day in their folder. Math: On Friday we started our new topic which focuses on multiples of 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. We will spend a couple of weeks with this topic as they will learn some tricks and two new properties for multiplication. In class, I have them using their whole bodies as we are practicing skip counting. Please continue to have them practice their math facts focusing on 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. Social Studies: As I said in the newsletter last week, we are going to work in two units at once. Two days out of the week, we will complete things inside of our Hispanic Heritage Month unit. We will cover a number of countries, starting with Mexico. We will continue to learn about different traditions, celebrations, and important figures. Like last year, I welcome all ideas. Important Information: Language Usage Map Test, September 28 Reading Map Test, September 29 Walk-a-thon, October 2 Picture day, October 5 Parent/teacher conferences, October 8 Early Dismissal, 11:30 am, October 8 No school, October 9 & 12 Third grade is cruising along! We are still working on following directions, actively listening, and staying on task. These are things that will work themselves out in time. We are still working hard to build a strong community. We will start doing some team building activities later this week and part of next week.
Walk-a-thon is quickly approaching. We are about three weeks out! It will be on Friday, October 2, 2020. It will be a half a day with dismissal being at 11:30 a..m. Please be sure to have them wear comfortable shoes and bring a reusable water bottle as we will walk just about 3 miles that day. Map testing will begin next week. I will send out the exact dates for those tests when I receive them. If you have any questions, please let me know. The memory verse that is due September 22 is Psalm 119: 11-12: I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes. Remote Wednesday Notice: Everything they will need to work on will be in their Wednesday folder or workbook. We will do everything together, so there will not be anything extra they will have to do. During the usual break periods, they should practice their math facts and study for their math test. I will provide them with a review game that they can play. They may also log onto Khan Academy to do some practice problems. They can now access Epic Reading. As of right now, they can only access it during school hours, so during one of their breaks, they can free read on Epic. The class code is tkt1947, and their pin in 2026. Reading: We are starting a new topic this week. We will spend the next two weeks talking about traditions. The essential question is “what can traditions teach you about culture?” We spent some time in class talking about different holidays that we celebrate and the different traditions we have with our families. With this new topic, we will spend some time with short e, o, and u vowel sounds, context clues, visualization, command & exclamatory sentences, and story sequencing. The genre focus is on realistic fiction. Writing: We will start our first writing unit on Thursday. We are going to work on Friendly Letters. On Monday, we talked about the importance of capital letters and commas in a friendly letter. We will spend two weeks in this unit. Math: We will wrap up the first topic on Thursday, which is the day of our math test. On Friday, we will move into topic 2, which will focus on multiplication. We are going to focus on multiples of 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. We will also learn new properties, identify, and zero property. During this topic, they should continue to practice their math facts, focusing on the multiples of 0,1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. Social Studies: We are going to try something different this year. We are going to try and do two units at once. We will continue to work on our social studies book unit, Our Environment. We are learning about the five regions of the world, their climates, natural resources, and how people have adapted to living in their environment. We will also move into our Hispanic Heritage Month unit. Unlike last year, we will not be able to do the 3rd/4th grade unit closing activity, but we will still get a chance to experience some of the things that we learned. During this unit, we will learn about some Spanish speaking countries. We will learn about their culture (food, dance, music), different traditions and holidays they have, and important figures. Important Information:
We made it through the second week! We struggled with following directions, staying on task and not talking while others are talking. Today was a better day, so I am hoping we will start to get into a groove.
We are focusing a lot of time on community. We talk about our classroom expectations and how one of the rules is “do not say words that hurt.” We talked about different phrases that can hurt, and even how laughing at someone's mistake can hurt as well. We are still working on the laughing factor but I am confident we will figure that out as well! The memory verse that is due September 15 is Psalm 119:9-10: How can young people keep their way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commandments. Technology: We practice using our computers everyday. I try to allow them to do different activities so they can become familiar with the program, but also master logging in/out. We will continue to use technology to enhance our learning and make it fun. Today they brought their computers home. They shouldn’t need to type their username, however if they do it is gls[first name][last name initial]26. So, an example would be glsrobinw26. The password is Grace2026. If you have any trouble with the computer please let me know. Reading: We are wrapping up our unit this week. On Friday they will have their first reading test and spelling test. We will continue to work through the unit focal points such as synonyms, sentences & fragments, statements & questions, fantasy, and character charts. Math: Today we spent some time reviewing lesson 1-3. It was obvious that my friends were confused down the line. It was also obvious that they did not refer back to the problems we did together in class. Please encourage them to look back at the questions we did in class as they are doing their homework. I always cover the questions that I know will be on their homework so that they have an example to follow. We will finish out the topic on Friday. Next week, we will take Monday and Tuesday to review. On Wednesday we will play a review game so they are ready for the test on Thursday. Important Information:
Welcome to third grade! I am looking forward to a wonderful year. At the beginning of 2020, the world lost Kobe Bryant, so this year we are called the Watson Mambas. We will build a strong community that works hard, we will give everything our all, and we will never quit. We will be Mamba strong!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We begin remote learning on Wednesday. Our main site will be Google Classroom. We may also use Savvas (math, science, and social studies) and Wonders (reading). They will bring home a blue folder, that they know as their Wednesday folder. In that folder will be a sheet that has their login information and the agenda for the day. The agenda can also be found on the class website, whatsupwatson.weebly.com. That will be the agenda that we follow every week. The only change would be if we do social studies instead of science. The username and password for Savvas and Wonders are the same. It is gls[first name][last initial]26 with Grace2026 as the password. So, an example username is glsrobinw26. The username and password for Google Classroom is similar but it is an email address. It is gls[first name][last initial][email protected] with Grace2026 as the password. So, an example would be [email protected]. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reading: I am trying something new this year. Instead of spending 1 week on a topic, we will spend take 2 weeks. That means that the reading tests and spelling tests will be every other Friday. We will take our time and go through grammar, phonics, writing, comprehension strategies such as character traits, and comprehension skills such as visualization. Our essential question for the week is, "what can stories teach us?" We discussed this question and the many lessons that we've learned from the stories/books we've read. In grammar, we are reviewing/reinforcing the difference in complete sentences, fragments, and different types of sentences. Math: We started the year off focusing on multiplication and division. So far we have covered multiplication as repeated addition and multiplication on a number line. They were surprised to learn that even when they are doing addition, they are sometimes multiplying. To finish the week off we will use arrays to solve equations and we will spend some time with the commutative property of multiplication. I encouraged them to continue to practice their math facts at home. The more exposure and practice they have, the easier multiplying and dividing will be. Social Studies: We have a new curriculum this year and I think they will like this one. Each unit has a “project” that they have to complete that helps them understand the overall topic of the unit. Some topics that we will cover are: economics, our environment, landmark and symbols, celebration/holidays, and communities. We will take breaks from the curriculum and hop into our Hispanic Heritage Month unit and Black History Month unit. We started with the "Our Environment" unit. We are learning about different regions in the US, and their similarities and differences. We also will learn about national parks, climate change, renewable resources, nonrenewable resources, and natural resources. Science: Similar to social studies, our science curriculum has a project that they will work on as we go through the unit that is intended to give them a real-life experience with the topic. Like usual, there will be labs and the really cool thing about this curriculum is that we can do labs online. Some topics that we will cover are: motion and forces, electricity and magnetism, weather, climate, life cycles and traits, fossil evidence, and adaptions. We started with motion and forces. The students are excited to design a pinball machine, which is the project they will work on throughout the topic. In this topic, we are learning that when something is moving or changing positions that means motion is occurring. We also learned that in order for something to move and change position, some type of force has to act on it. As we go through the topic we will learn about relative motion, speed, patterns in motion, contact forces, noncontact forces, and balanced and unbalanced forces. Religion: We are starting the year of learning about the Bible. We are learning about its history (original languages, the number of years it took to write it, the number of people God called on during the writing process), the different parts it has (concordance, testaments), and what it means to us as Christians. This unit sets the foundation for our future units, which include The Creation story, Letters from Paul, Abraham, Moses, The Fall to Babel, Joseph, and Issac and Jacob. Every year each grade conducts a chapel service. Each year third grade works with the church to collect cans for the local food pantry. We usually spend time talking about hunger, how it impacts our day to day lives, and ways that we can help people that are hungry, As we continue to talk about hunger, we will jump into our Bibles and read what God says about those less fortunate and what we should do as believers and followers of Christ. How and when we will present our chapel service has yet to be determined but I will let you know as soon as I have more information. Important Information:
