Hello everyone and welcome to third grade! I am looking forward to having an awesome school year! We are off to a good start, however we are a little chatty. The chattiness is beginning to distract some friends, so please encourage them to stay on task, stay focused, and follow directions. It is only the second week, so I understand that things will get better as the year goes on.
Reading: For reading this year, we are trying something new where we work in centers. So far things are moving smoothly. There are a few hiccups along the way, but that is expected as we are still learning. We have 5 reading centers: Drop Everything and Read (DEAR). word work, strategy work, reading response, and teacher meeting. each center will be explained during curriculum night, which is tomorrow beginning at 6:30. Our essential question for the week is, "what can stories teach us?" We discussed this question and the many lessons that we've learned from the stories/books we've read. In grammar we are reviewing/reinforcing the difference in complete sentences, different type of sentences and fragments. Math: We started the year off focusing on multiplication and division. So far we have covered multiplication as repeated addition and we solve multiplication problems on a number line. To finish the week of we will use arrays to solve equations and we will spend some time with commutative property of multiplication. I encourage you to continue to practice their math facts at home. The more exposure and practice they have, the easier multiplying and dividing will be. Social Studies: We only have social studies on 3 days (wed-fri), so I try to make the best of those three days. We will start the year off with talking about the rights and responsibilities we have as citizens. We will talk about the president and what she or he does for our country. We will also talk about the branches of government. I have a lot of fun things planned for them during this block. Science: Our big question for the first chapter is "what is science?" Each lesson has its own question, and we focus on those to help us answer the big question. We practice using directional and descriptive language to open up our science chapter. So far we've only covered lesson one, which just talks about what a scientist is, what they do and the kinds of questions they ask. The next lesson will focus on the skills scientist use. By the end of this chapter the students will have conducted one experiment and have exposure to the scientific method. Religion: We are starting the year off by focusing on our service project. Every year third grade works with the church to collect cans for the local food pantry. We usually spend time talking about hunger, how it impacts our day to day lives and ways that we can help people that are hungry, We played a little game today where the students worked with their table group to "feed their families." Each table family had a different amount of members and a different amount of money. As we continue to talk about hunger, we will jump into our bibles and read what God says about those less fortunate and what we should do as believers and followers of christ. We will wrap up our unit by creating a presentation for chapel service, which will be November 6. Important Information:
