We had a rough week. We really struggled with following directions, being kind, and being respectful to others. We started this week off reviewing our classroom rules, talking about kindness, and bucket filling.
Reading: We are jumping back into our reading books. This week we are discussing how animals and people are unique. On Monday, we talked about the different things that make us unique. We are moving back into the realm of folktales. It was hard for us to think so far back to use prior knowledge, but they did good with their recall. We introduced plot, and discovered that the problem and solution of a story is what creates the plot. Challenge them to find the plot in the different stories that they read at home. We are also focusing on verbs this week. We will also spend some more time with synonyms and antonyms. We will do some contraction work and some r-controlled vowel sound work. The extra credit word for the week is Unique. Science: We are moving into our new unit, chapter 6. We are learning about the water cycle. We will also look at weather and climate and do a small project/activity about weather. We will also do an outside investigation involving dirt, minerals, rocks, soil, and sand. Social Studies: We are powering through our unit on the government. We are wrapping up the history and importance of government. We learned about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Once we are done learning about the "foundation" of the government, we will take a deeper look into how the government actually works. We will learn about our state government and the 3 branches of government. Our first social studies test will be the week after thanksgiving break. Math: We are slowly moving into topic 5. We will take some time to review topic 1-4 because topic 5 requires them to have a strong understanding of multiplication and division. In this topic they will learn what a multiplication table is, and how to use it. They will learn how to apply strategies when multiplying. By the end of this topic, they should be able to write, and solve multiplication and division word problems. This will probably be the most challenging topic they will have. Please continue to work on their math facts at home. Important dates:

It seems like the kiddos are finally settling into third grade. We are having better weeks in terms of behavior and following directions. We haven't been as kind to each other lately, so we are still working on bucket dipping and making sure we are filling up baskets. During our town hall meeting on Friday, we took some time to give out compliments and thank someone, and it seem like everyone liked being about to give and receive them. We survived our first field trip! I will do better with giving out notices ahead of time. We started out Christmas Eve service memory work this week. It is on a green sheet. If they have not given it to you, please ask them for it. If you need another copy let me know.
Reading: I decided to give ourselves some what of a break this week. Instead of moving into a new unit, we are reviewing the skills we learned in this unit. We are going to review how to make predictions, theme, and authors point of view. They will take a unit test which will take about two days to finish. They will bring part of it home on Thursday and finish the rest here at school. Please allow them to this independently. You can help them but try to refrain from "leading" them to the answers. We will have the final drafts of our biographies done by Friday and they will begin to go up next week. Math: We are wrapping up the unit this week and the math test will either be Friday or Monday. I am aiming for Friday, but as we begin to review I will know more. We are using khan academy more these days as it is helping to reinforce the skills we are learning in class. As a whole, we are getting better with our multiplication and division, and we are now throwing math language into the mix. Science: We finished chapter 2 and we had a successful time at MSI. We will take some time this week to talk about how our field trip goes along with what we learned in class. We are also going to take some time to create a study guide together, so that they feel confident on Friday when we take our test. Social Studies: We are back in our social studies book. We reviewed lesson one that we started many moons ago with a fun Kahoot. We are learning about the government and how it was started. We learned that the United States is a republic and the Constitution and Declaration of Independence are important documents for our country. On Monday, we watched a School House Rock Video about the Constitution. We will watch the other School House Rock video on the Bill of Rights. As we move throughout this unit and chapter we will do a lot of fun activities that allow the students to have some hands on experience and allow us to continue to grow as a community. Important dates:
We're having better weeks and hopefully things continue to improve. Field trip forms will be coming home Thursday. We will be going to the Museum of Science and Industry next week. Some friends have missing assignments, please encourage them to do them by Friday. I sent home extra copies, and if I didn't then it is still in their math or YT book. If you have any questions please let me know.
Religion: We are running chapel tomorrow so if you can please stop by and see all of their hard work unfold. Chapel starts at 8:30. I hope to see you there. :) You still have time to send in more soup cans and crackers tomorrow, so please continue to do that. They will begin to have their Christmas Eve Service memory work next week and it will be challenging as they have to remember songs and verses. Writing: We are moving into the final drafts of our biographies and they will make their way up onto the bulletin board along side their picture. The kiddos are excited for them to go up. Reading: This week we are focusing on one of my absolute favorite things, poetry. We are learning about limericks and free verse poems. We read some silly ones and the students will get a chance to write some of their own pieces. We are also learning about alliteration and rhyming and the impact that they have on poetry. Metaphors and similes circled back around as they are important in the figurative language world. The essential question is "how do people figure things out?" We spent some time discussing that and they will read some poems about people who solve a problem. The challenge word for the week is imagine. Math: We are powering through topic 4 and we are trying to reinforce our multiplication skills as we enhance our division skills. During tech time, Wednesdays and Fridays, we spend time on Khan Academy working through both multiplication and division. Khan academy allows them to see the things we are learning in new ways, which is helping them with figuring out the answers to the problems that we are working on. We did a little check-in game quiz last week and I can tell that we need to spend another week with this topic before we move on. Science: We finished our egg experiment and we learned that corn syrup will make an egg shrink/shrivel up and that water will either make it grow or do nothing. We also learned that if you let an egg sit in vinegar long enough it becomes so clear that you can see through it. A lot of friends accidentally popped their eggs and were sad. We are finishing up chapter 2, and the field trip will coincide with this chapter. Important Dates:
