What a week! We have covered a lot in this first week. We learned routines, expectations, and even dived into our curriculum. I hope you have heard of the fun things we've done! Typically in the newsletter I will give a summary of how the week went, along with reminders at the very end.
Reading: We dived into the fantasy genre, and we are reading different stories that help us learn or discover something different. Along with that, we are practicing visualization, so we are paying close attention to details and descriptions as we read. Our spelling words for the week are review words and focus on the short a and i words. We will cover our grammar topics later in the week, which include sentence fragments, and the different types of sentences (statement, question, exclamatory and command). Math: We have started learning about multiplication. We are first learning it in the form of addition, before we slowly start to work with multiplication problems alone. That is scary for some of us but we are up for the challenge! Science: Chapter one focuses on the nature of science. This week we will cover lessons one and two, which focuses on what questions scientist ask and what skills do they use. We brainstormed some questions and had a awesome class discussion on how scientist investigate, observe, and analyze moon trees. We also drifted off into reading and looked at the different text features on the pages that could help us predict what topic the page would cover. Religion: We started religion by discussing our theme for the year, Ephesians 4:1-6. We focused closely on verse 2 and 4-5. In verse 2, it talks about the manner in which we should walk, "with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love." We discussed how this would look like inside and outside of our classroom. In verses 4-5, it talked about God, and he is ONE and we are apart of him, he is above us, in us and with us. Class dojo: The students are very excited about it and are anxious to earn enough points to trade in for dojo dollars and/or cash in for one of the rewards. So far the excitement has been for sitting at my desk and teaching a lesson. Other Information: Please join us for Curriculum Night this Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00pm. There will be two classroom sessions, 6:30-6:55 and 7:35-8:00 (You only need to attend one of these sessions). The general session will be at 7:00 and it will conclude around 7:30. This is a parent only event, and we will cover curriculum, classroom procedures (homework, behavior), and classroom volunteer opportunities. If you are unable to attend, a packet of information will come home in your child's Tuesday folder. Tuesday folders will come home every Tuesday, and they will have a white slip in the cover. On there, will be comments from be on behavior, memory work, and missing assignments. There is space for you to write back, but if you have nothing to write, please still initial the box. UPCOMING DATES: 9/3: Labor Day Holiday (No School) 9/7: First Hot lunch @ Concordia Cafeteria

Reading:
Grades K-5 are using the curriculum Reading Wonders. With this curriculum, students have exposure to non-fiction and fictional text. They will receive explicit instruction during whole group and small group times. Through Wonders, students will be exposed to new spelling and vocabulary. There will be spelling pretest at the beginning of every week and the actual test will be at the end of the week. If they receive 100% on the pretest, it will be expected for them to practice the challenge words. Math: We will continue to use our Envision 2.0 curriculum. The concepts only get "harder" from this point. During third grade they will be introduced to multiplication and division. It was touched on briefly in second grade when they learned about arrays. So, it will be reintroduced in a similar fashion. Other concepts that we will be adding to our skill brief case are..... Social Studies: We will start our Social Studies unit by studying our communities. We will talk about communities that we are familiar with (where we live, and go to school). Then we will learn about the different communities around the United states, before moving onto the communities around the world. After learning about those different communities, we will learn about the PEOPLE in those communities and what do they do. Science: Our science curriculum is a very hands-on experience for the students. They have the opportunity to discover science, analyze data, and continue to practice nonfiction reading/comprehension skills. Through the year I will try to integrate some new experiments that will help us discover more about "everyday" science. We start over kind of broad by focusing on what science is, what are scientist, and what do they do. Writing: Wonders has a writing component that we will use, along with the many other opportunities I will provide for us to make writing progress. These opportunities will consist of journaling, book reviews, and cross-curricular projects. Cursive is something that we will spend significant time on this year. Sometimes work may be required in cursive or possibly sections. However, that will happen more so towards the end of the year. Religion: We are using the 'Walking with God and His People' curriculum; by Christian Schools International. This school year our theme verse comes from Ephesians 4:1-6. During the first couple of weeks of school we will look deeper into the meaning of the verses and our theme and what it means for us in our classroom, in our Grace community and possibly outside of our Grace Community. Special Projects: We will have special projects throughout the year. One of the projects we will have is reading related. The students will get to choose what book they want to read out of 8 choices. They will each be assigned chapters to read, and as a group they will discuss what they read. After they have finished the books, they will work on a group presentation in class, and present the book to the class. More details about this will come out later, so please do not worry about this right now. Homework: Students will have homework Monday through Thursday. I am a firm believer that on Friday when they leave school, they should be able to enjoy time with family and not stress about what's due. The only time that something may be due on a Monday is if it's a project that they've worked on over a period of time. Homework should not take them longer than 40 minutes. Sometimes, things that they do not finish in class will come home as homework. Communication: I will communicate with parents in a multitude of ways. Same as always, their Tuesday folders will go home every Tuesday. Inside of their folder will be their work, and a note from me. On Tuesday, please make it a habit to sit down and go over the work that is in their folders. As I stated during registration night, we will be using class dojo, and if you've created a parent account that is linked to the class, I will be able to send you pictures, and updates. I will also be able to message you as if we are texting. My email is an open door. My email address is [email protected]. I will respond as quickly as I can. However I may not get to it during the school day. I will make sure to respond within 24 hours. My extension is 305, feel free to call and leave a voicemail if I do not answer. However, if it is urgent, call Mrs. Maggio in the school office and she will be sure to get the message to me. On the website is a tab that says newsletter. That is the location where you can read a brief summary of our week, and hear about the different things that we did. Sometimes there may be pictures and videos, so feel free to download those if you want. In that tab is where you will also find important information such as upcoming events, days when there is a half of day, no school, field trip, and hot lunch. If you need to meet with me in person, call or email to set up an appointment. I will be sure to see you within a day or two of the appointment if possible. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Although our class does not have peanut allergies, the 4th-6th grade classes do, so our floor is a peanut free zone. That goes for our common room where we have lunch. So, unfortunately the students will not be able to bring PB&J. If you will prefer for you child to have PB&J, you will need to supplement the peanut for sun butter. |
