Thank you all for being flexible over the last couple of weeks :) Some friends have missing assignments, so please encourage them to get those turned in by Tuesday, November 5th. If they need another copy, please email me and I will be sure to get them the assignments.
Our Halloween party is Thursday! If students would like to bring treats or goodie bags to pass out, feel free to send them! They are not allowed to wear a costume, but they can dress festive (skulls, pumpkins, things that are orange and black, etc). If you have any questions, please ask away. I know students where concerned about homework and the possibility of having it. The only homework on Thursday will be finishing up their spelling pages if they are not already in, and grammar book pages. Religion: We are putting together our presentations and we are looking forward to finalizing them and starting the rehearsal stage. Monday and Tuesday next week I will probably ask for volunteers, so if you are available please let me know. Our chapel service is November 6 @ 8:30. We are still collecting cans, so please continue to send those in. Also, as per the other news letter, money donations are welcomed as well. Reading: The essential questions for the week is, how can people help animals?" Yesterday we spent some time talking about our favorite animals and how we would feel if they were on the verge of being extinct. We talked about the many ways that we can help animals. We read a story about a brother and sister (8 and 7) who helped an organization save sea turtles. They were pretty shocked to see that kids can start a program. We are still focusing on author purpose and why authors write different things. We will also do some work with suffixes and revisit prefixes, since those are related. The extra credit word for the week is resources. Writing: We are in the last stages of the biographies that we've been working on. We took a break from them for a while, but the goal is to have them done by Friday or Tuesday. They will go up on the bulletin board outside of the room, so stand by for the pictures when they go. :) Math: We are getting stronger in the division, so please continue to practice with them at home. Since division is our struggle area, we are going to take a break from the book and review the things that we've covered so far. We will do a little check-in quiz to make sure that we can move forward successfully. Important Dates:

There has been a lot of confusion since I've been gone, so our class is in what I've deemed recovery. Today we spent majority of the day trying to figure out what they covered and what they did not cover while I was out. They were sent home with a reading packet, which is not something that I would EVER send home. They all worked on it, so they will get a completion grade, as that is not something that they should have gotten. So for that I apologize.
Religion: We have wrapped up our hunger unit and we're preparing for our presentation. They are so excited to present the information to the whole school. They decided that they wanted to blind three presentations into one, so they are divided into groups. One group is doing the power point, another group is writing a speech, and the other group is telling a story to depict what they learned. I am so excited for you all to see what they put together. When we begin to put the presentation together, I'll ask for volunteers. So if you are available mornings at 8:30, please let me know. Their chapel service will be November 6. We are still collecting cans of soup and crackers. Please continue to send those in. Also, if you would like to donate money instead, that is something that will be appreciated as well. All money donated goes directly to the church organizer, Julie Modrich, who goes too Jewel, Aldi, and other stores to pick up cans of soup. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Reading: The essential question for the week is, "how do people make the government work." Both stories that we read for the week focuses on the importance of voting, the power of voting and the voting process. This ties in with the social studies unit that we're going to pick back up, as that focuses on the history of our government, the 3 branches, and the laws and rights that we have as citizens. We made a shift from theme and started focusing on the Author's purpose/point of view. The thing that I've stressed is that when they are trying to figure out the POV, they should ask themselves, "what does the author want me to learn? what should I walk away with?" We also took some time to look at prefixes and how they can change a word completely. Due to the fact that the sub didn't follow the plans that I left, we've played catch up and we're working through the gaps that were created. They will not have their normal test on Friday, as we're going to continue to iron things out. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you all for being flexible. Math: We are entering the world or division. This topic will be a little challenging based off the timed test that I've given them. Division is the area that we need to focus on. If you could do some practice with that at home that would be awesome. The first lesson reintroduce division by having them do multiplication problems, and create fact families. Creating fact families is something that you can do at home as well. Understanding the relationship between multiplication and division will help tremendously during this topic. Science: We are moving into the second chapter, which is on technology. It is not as long as chapter one, so we will finish it within the first couple of weeks in November. The big chapter questions is, "how can technology affect our lives?" By the end of the chapter they will be expected to answer that question. This chapter only has three lessons, and the first lesson focuses on the different forms of technology, which surprised them. They were shocked that glasses and a bike helmet are considered to be forms of technology. Once we finish this chapter, we will take our first field trip. I will give more information about this as time goes on. Important Dates: 10/31: Halloween Party 11/1: Hot Lunch 11/6: 3rd grade chapel service 8:30am 11/15: End of trimester 1 We've had a strange couple of weeks but the kiddos have kept it together and continued to be flexible. As you all know I lost my grandfather so I've been in and out and I'll continue to be in and out for the next couple of days. I will not be in Thursday, Friday or Monday. I will be with my mom helping her finish the funeral arrangements. On Tuesday I will be at a math conference. There is a high chance that their Tuesday folders come home on Wednesday next week. I will have my phone on me, so I can check emails and class dojo message. If you need to communicate pick up changes, or information pertaining to that day, please call the office and let Mrs. Maggio know.
We are working with the church to collect soup cans and crackers. We will began to collect them from other classroom next week, but they are asked to bring them in as well. They do not have to bring in a ton, but since it is our event, they need to participate in some shape of form. If you have nay questions or concerns, please let me know. Reading: Our essential question for the week is, "why do people immigrate to new places? We watched a video that showed us where people in the past would go when they were immigrating to America. We then had a wonderful discussion about the reasons someone would want to leave their home and they all had wonderful ideas that essentially proved that people immigrated and still immigrate for a better life. We are focusing on historical fiction, so we are reading make believe stories that take place in a real time period. We read a story today about. family who immigrated from Ireland in search of a new home as they were in need of money, food and resources. We are focusing on theme again this week, so the students will do a lot of work with identifying the lesson learned/message. Math: We are wrapping up topic three. This topic was a little challenging as it forced the students to learn, apply, and explain two different properties. Due to the fact that some of them are struggling with multiplying 2 numbers, the associative property is a little challenging. Encourage them to apply the commutative property with the associative property so that the equations are easier to solve. For example, if the problem is 3x7x3, encourage them to switch the problem too 3x3x7 so that they can make the problem 9x7, which they can solve using the 9s trick. It would help them a lot to have extra practice at home with both the distributive property and the associative property. Their math test will be Thursday. Social Studies: This week we wrap up our social studies unit on Hispanic Heritage Month. We have learned a handful of countries but not all of them. If you have not been up to the 3rd floor commons to check out the bulletin board, feel free to do so as you have time. Some of their art work from the different countries are posted up. We are wrapping up making our Costa Rica carts that they will get to bring home next week. This Friday we will have a culture fest with 4th grade. You do not need to bring in anything or contribute anything. If you would like to come in and offer a hand, please let me know and I will put you down as an extra hand. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Science: We are done with our chapter, so we have moved into the reviewing and studying stages. We wrapped up our practice test today, so over the next couple of days they will work on different review activities and play some review games. We are also preparing to enter into the action stages of our egg experiment. We will begin those next week as we move into the next chapter in our science book. Our science test is scheduled for Thursday, but it can be pushed back to Friday if needed. Important Dates:
We are having better weeks, but I know we can all do better. So, continue to encourage them to stay focused, on task and to follow directions. We finished map testing and those scores will be coming back soon. Walk-a-thon is this Friday! We will have an early dismissal (11:45). I do believe extended care will be available. We brought in the most items for the Walk-a-thon fundraiser, so we won the breakfast party! More details about that will come out as I receive them.
In their Tuesday folders, students brought home a flyer about the can food drive that we will participate in. The students are excited to prepare their presentation for chapel. The chapel service will be November 6, so please keep that date locked in. Parent/teacher conferences are next week. A email with a link to sign up for a slot was sent out. I am looking forward to meeting with you all. Reading: Our essential question for the week is, "How can landmarks teach us about our country's history?" We took some time to discus the question and we even took some time to list some of the landmarks and monuments that we know of. We are focusing on expository text this week, so we are reading stories that are real and provide us with information. We read a story about the Grand Canyon and we will read another story about Mount Rushmore. Since Walk-a-thon is Friday we will take our spelling and reading test Thursday. Math: We are moving along very well. In topic 2 we covered the "easy" math facts, 0,2,1,5,9, and 10. In topic 3 we are working on the more difficult ones. In topic 3 we will work with 3,4,6,7, and 8. We started the topic off by focusing on the distributive property. This property is very useful because it allows them to break apart difficult equations into 2 smaller easier equations and then use addition to solve. We will spend a lot of time with that particular property, so if you can help them practice it at home, it will do a lot of good. Social Studies: We are still learning about different Spanish speaking countries. We have not covered a lot of them, but my goal is to cover a good amount of them. On October 18, we will have a culture fest with the 4th grade class. We will do some fun activities, learn more about specific countries (so far its Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Costa Rica) and learn how to salsa. In class, we've learned some holidays that are celebrated, we learned about some of their main dishes, and we learned about some things that were brought over from that country. Science: We are almost done with the final lesson in our first chapter. We started looking at our science experiment question, which is "Can you shrink an egg? Can you make an egg bigger?" The students are excited to try this and I am looking forward to hearing their thoughts and explanations. I am also excited to see them in action. We will take our first science test next week.
