We've had a strange couple of weeks but the kiddos have kept it together and continued to be flexible. As you all know I lost my grandfather so I've been in and out and I'll continue to be in and out for the next couple of days. I will not be in Thursday, Friday or Monday. I will be with my mom helping her finish the funeral arrangements. On Tuesday I will be at a math conference. There is a high chance that their Tuesday folders come home on Wednesday next week. I will have my phone on me, so I can check emails and class dojo message. If you need to communicate pick up changes, or information pertaining to that day, please call the office and let Mrs. Maggio know.
We are working with the church to collect soup cans and crackers. We will began to collect them from other classroom next week, but they are asked to bring them in as well. They do not have to bring in a ton, but since it is our event, they need to participate in some shape of form. If you have nay questions or concerns, please let me know. Reading: Our essential question for the week is, "why do people immigrate to new places? We watched a video that showed us where people in the past would go when they were immigrating to America. We then had a wonderful discussion about the reasons someone would want to leave their home and they all had wonderful ideas that essentially proved that people immigrated and still immigrate for a better life. We are focusing on historical fiction, so we are reading make believe stories that take place in a real time period. We read a story today about. family who immigrated from Ireland in search of a new home as they were in need of money, food and resources. We are focusing on theme again this week, so the students will do a lot of work with identifying the lesson learned/message. Math: We are wrapping up topic three. This topic was a little challenging as it forced the students to learn, apply, and explain two different properties. Due to the fact that some of them are struggling with multiplying 2 numbers, the associative property is a little challenging. Encourage them to apply the commutative property with the associative property so that the equations are easier to solve. For example, if the problem is 3x7x3, encourage them to switch the problem too 3x3x7 so that they can make the problem 9x7, which they can solve using the 9s trick. It would help them a lot to have extra practice at home with both the distributive property and the associative property. Their math test will be Thursday. Social Studies: This week we wrap up our social studies unit on Hispanic Heritage Month. We have learned a handful of countries but not all of them. If you have not been up to the 3rd floor commons to check out the bulletin board, feel free to do so as you have time. Some of their art work from the different countries are posted up. We are wrapping up making our Costa Rica carts that they will get to bring home next week. This Friday we will have a culture fest with 4th grade. You do not need to bring in anything or contribute anything. If you would like to come in and offer a hand, please let me know and I will put you down as an extra hand. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Science: We are done with our chapter, so we have moved into the reviewing and studying stages. We wrapped up our practice test today, so over the next couple of days they will work on different review activities and play some review games. We are also preparing to enter into the action stages of our egg experiment. We will begin those next week as we move into the next chapter in our science book. Our science test is scheduled for Thursday, but it can be pushed back to Friday if needed. Important Dates:
