There is no memory work this week. We have a busy week with us having a science and social studies test this week. On Friday, we will have our Halloween party. Now that they are in third grade, they are not allowed to wear costumes anymore. It will start at 1:30 p.m. If the weather is nice we will finish the day outside.
Math: We took some time this week to review some things that we were struggling with, distributive property, and certain factors. Please continue to practice having them multiply using factors 3,4,6,7, and 8. We made multiplication flowers that they can use to visualize the equations. That is an easy activity that they can do at home as well. We should wrap up topic three next week, with the test being next Friday, November 6. Reading: We are moving into a new topic this week. We are learning about landmarks, monuments, memorials, and what they teach us. Since we are learning about historical things, the genre focus is expository text. We talked in length about many different important places. We talked about the Grand Canyon, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty. The essential question is, “How do landmarks help us understand our country’s history?” The skill focus for the week is main idea and key details. We spent some time practicing how to find the main idea and details to support it. Please encourage them to practice this skill when they are free reading. In grammar, we are working on simple and compound sentences. We will continue to practice this skill as we go through the year because they need to add sentence variety to their writing. Learning simple and compound sentences will be very beneficial as we prepare for our new unit on Friday. Important Dates:

The memory work for the week is: Matthew 5:6-8 (Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.) due October 27.
We are having a rough time with listening and following directions. It tends to be more so on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. I’m not sure if it’s the remote learning day that throws things off, but we will continue to work on things. We’re also going to revisit our community and friendship conversation, as we seem to struggle in that area again as well. I’m hopeful things will turn around and we will bounce back like rockstars! Reading: We are continuing our conversation about inventions. So far we learned about Chester Greenwood and his earmuffs, Mary Anderson and her windshield wipers, George Crum and his potato chips, and Elijah McCoy and his oil cup. We are continuing our talk about cause and effect and how we can find them in different books that we read, such as Snowmen At Night and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. They really enjoyed seeing that the things in our reading curriculum are also found in other things, even social studies. Our reading and spelling test will be Friday. Science: We have finished our first topic and we will have our test on Thursday. In their Tuesday folder, you will find a review sheet that will have everything that they will need to know for their test. I will also provide a link for Kahoot, similar to our math review, for them to go through to help them review. Social Studies: We are wrapping up our last lesson for our first topic and we will move into the reviewing stages. We will also wrap up our quest project, which is on National Parks. We will move into the reviewing stages on Friday and continue them on Monday. The test is slated to be Tuesday, but the date can change if we need more time. They will be provided with a review sheet, and a review game/Kahoot, just like with math and science. Math: We are crawling through topic 3. This topic is on some of the harder factors, 3,4,6,7,8, and two complicated properties. We learned 3’s facts on Monday and 4’s facts today, and they struggled with skip counting. Please spend some extra time on those facts, and maybe even have them create a dance. I’ve learned that it helps to get children moving, especially with multiplication and division. So, in class we skip, we make beats, and we play head, shoulders, knees, and toes. If you need more suggestions or ideas, please let me know. Continue to have them use the distributive property, as it’s important that they understand how to use it, but also feel comfortable to use it, This will help them solve equations with factors they have yet to master. On Thursday, we will do a check-in to see if we need to recap before continuing through the topic. Important Dates:
We are starting our chapel service religion unit. I’m not sure if we will have an actual chapel service like previous years. However, we’re still pushing through. Our chapel service unit typically ties in with the church's canned food drive, So, we are focusing on hunger, poverty, and what the Bible says about those who are in need. The main focus is for them to walk away understanding how God feels about those who are in need, and what he wants us to do as his children. This unit tends to be a fun one, and one that sticks with them.
The memory verses for this unit comes from The Beatitudes, which is Matthew chapter 5. We are starting with verses 3-5. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the Earth.” This will be due on October 20. Math: As explained in our last newsletter, we are moving into a new topic. We will spend a great deal of time with this topic as it introduces two new properties, which are very challenging. We are starting the topic off by learning about the distributive property of multiplication. We will spend about 3 days focusing on that before we move into learning about the remaining factors. In the previous topic, we covered 0,1,2,5,9,and 10. In this topic, we will cover 3,4,6,7,8. Multiplying with these factors tend to be a little harder than the others, so I encourage you to start throwing those factors into the flashcard pile. Reading: We are learning about inventions and biographies this week. We’ve already read one biography, Chester Greenwood, and his cold ears, and we learned that he invented earmuffs. The essential question for the week is “How can problem-solving lead to new ideas?” We discussed this question while looking at a picture of a boy using a robot to feed himself cereal. It was pretty entertaining to hear them try to think of “problems,” the boy may have faced that caused him to invent such a robot. We will talk about cause and effect and how there is always an effect of an action. We talked about cause and effect briefly today and that brought us back to our essential question and led to a good discussion about how problem-solving is the cause and the new idea is the effect. Writing: We will finish with our paragraph unit this Friday before we move into one of our longer pieces. Our next unit will be a “How-to” essay. More details on that will come out as we prepare to move into that unit. Science: We have finished the last lesson in our first science chapter. So we will move into the reviewing stages this week. We will also work on creating the final product of our pinball machines. I am looking forward to seeing their designs come to “life,” even if they’re on paper. The science test is slated to be next Tuesday. The date could change if we need more time to review. Social Studies; We are almost done with our Hispanic Heritage Month unit along with our first social studies unit. We will wrap up our Hispanic Heritage Month unit this Friday with the students doing presentations on the last four countries that we’re covering. We will then wrap up our social studies lesson and move into the reviewing stages. The social studies test is slated to be next Friday. However, like science, the date can change if we need more time to review. Important Dates;
We are rocking and rolling in third grade! Every so often we hit a stumbling block but we bounce back. Continue to encourage them to stay focused and to practice whole body listening.
Walk-a-thon was a success! I was so happy to see all of you there. The students really enjoyed their time. There were contests throughout September and we brought in the most money. We won an extra-long recess with a picnic. I, unfortunately, do not know when that will happen but I will let you know. Parent-teacher conferences are this Thursday. They will be 12 minutes in length. I will try to limit myself to 6 minutes so that you have 6 minutes to ask questions and share things as well. I will send out reminders tomorrow and Thursday morning. I look forward to seeing/talking to you all. Math: We have reached the end of our second topic. We have moved into the reviewing stage of things. Our math test will be this Thursday. Topic 3 will move similar to topic 2. We will focus on multiplying using 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 as factors. I recommend continuing to have them practice their math facts. Multiplication with nine as a factor is still hard for some friends, so spend a little time on 9’s. During topic 3, we will also add more properties that will help us with understanding multiplication even more. We will learn about the distributive and associative property. Reading: We are wrapping up our third topic this week. Next week we will move into our fourth topic, which is on inventions. We will also continue working in our paragraph unit. We spent some time already learning the key components of a paragraph and how they work together. During our class discussion, they took the conversation deeper and thought about how paragraphs work within stories and longer essays. I was proud to see them thinking about what we were learning and making the connections. Social Studies: We are wrapping up our Hispanic Heritage Month unit. I tried something new this year with trying to do two units at once, and we, unfortunately, did not cover as many countries as I had hoped. However, the kids have enjoyed the unit so far. They have enjoyed the music and the videos that we have watched. Outside of that unit, we are almost done with our first chapter in our social studies lesson. When we finish lesson 4, we will complete our quest project on National Parks, and then begin the reviewing process. Important Information:
