Hello! It has been a while! I hope all of your Thanksgiving breaks were great, and I am reading about some of them in the kiddos journals. Since there is nothing to report from last week, I'll give you some insight onto how the week and maybe next week will look.
Math: We took a break from division, but now we're back. We are learning about different rules, different tricks, and different tools that can help us. Division is kind of tricky still, so I think we are going to spend some more time on it. We get the concept, but some of us are not building the relationship bridge between multiplication and division. So, we are going to tackle that before the test. Reading: We are still focusing on expository text, and author's point of view. We have mastered finding the point of view, but we are not always able to find details to support the POV. However, sometimes we can find 2-4 details, but we are not able to connect them to find a POV. So, hopefully by the end of the week, we master it, and can comfortably move on. We are also working with more silent letters, and blended letters. Our spelling list has a lot of them, and got all of them during the pre-test. We are moving from prefix to suffix. We are going to make flashcards for those as well, and put both on a big ring. We will do some practice with not only identifying the prefix and or suffix, but identifying the new meaning of the word. Social Studies: We will take our test on Tuesday, to end our unit on communities. We also have Concordia students over, and they are teaching lessons on goods and services that can be found in different communities. I really like how they made that connection for the students. We will start a social studies project, that will be mostly done in class. I will give the students an option to take it home or work on it in school. The project will consist of them receiving one of their choices from the community workers chart we made. From there they will complete a simple "About Me" activity, where they speak as if they are in that position. They tell what job they have, what they do, how they help the community/communities, and why they are important. They will then draw a picture of themselves dressed in their work uniform. Science: We started a new chapter today that is focusing on living things, the life cycle of animals, and how to classify things. Yesterday we practiced our classification skills but classifying/grouping shells. They seemed to really enjoy that, and they loved putting the shells to their ears. Today we talked about the many ways to classify animals. We practiced grouping a number of animals based off speed, size, and they way they look. Religion: We will start our Christmas Unit next week. I am excited to start it, and I'm sure the students will love the big end result. We are also getting ready to start our heavy loaded practice weeks. By the middle of next week we should have the verse memorized, and start working on one of the songs. This Friday, we will recite the second paragraph (Luke 2:3-5) and then on Tuesday, they will say Luke 2:6-7. We are picking up the pace so that they are ready to go for rehearsals. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them! Important Information:

Our first field trip was a successful one! I believe we all had an awesome time, and I think we were all pretty tired after. The week itself was a great one, however the start of this one was kind of rocky. We have managed to rally back. We are a little stressed with division this week, but hopefully it becomes easier.
Math: We started division last Thursday, and we've been chugging along ever since. Division is a little tricker than multiplication, so sometimes we get a little confused. The book presents the equations in multiple ways, and we are all not used to seeing them that way. However, we never quit, and we are fighting through. I do think we will take a small break in the middle of chapter 4, so possibly Monday. I think the break is needed because the concept is new, and a lot more challenging than multiplication. I think we will spend some time building the mental bridge between multiplication and division. I think that will help with a lot of the stress that we've been feeling lately. Reading: We are leaving theme alone for now, and entering the world of authors point of view. This gets a little tricky because the text doesn't always use the words "I think" or "I feel," so we are forced to use context clues, and use words that describe/show feelings to help guide us. We are also working hard on finishing part one of our projects and moving into part two. The goal is to take the two days that we have next week to present them, however, I believe we may have to push the presentation date back to the week after thanksgiving. We did not get to do a lot of prediction making activities last week, so we will spend some time with those this week, and next week. We are also learning about silent letters, and how tricky they are. When we took our pretest for spelling, a lot of them were tricked by some of the silent letters. We are also learning about prefixes, and how they can change the meaning of the words. We are making flashcards that we will use to help us remember them. Social Studies: We are wrapping up the work part of our unit, and getting ready to head into the fun part. The one thing that I noticed about this group is that they love teaching each other. I decided that once we've gone over the important vocabulary words, and the different classifications of the communities, we would dive into our textbooks. I would then put them into groups, where they will teach the different lessons to each other. After we cover that, we will move into the people that work in these different communities, and how they are important to their respective communities. They had asked about another project, but I think we will take a break from projects for a little while. Memory Work: As I shared in the last newsletter, the memory work that they will be working on is coming from Mrs. Dennen. We will work on it in school, but they will be asked to work on it at home as well. We started with the verse that they have to memorize, Luke 2:1-7. On the sheet that was sent home yesterday in their Tuesday folder it is broken down into paragraphs and numbered, 1,2,3. On Monday, November 19, they will be expected to recite paragraph 1, which is verses 1-2. It says "And it came to pass, in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria." Please be sure to memorize it as it is written on the sheet, due to the fact that they will be reciting it together during the service. I will have a sheet uploaded to the website, and I will also email a copy with this newsletter. If you have any questions, please let me know! :) Important Information:
This week has been a crazy one. We've pushed everything aside for the most part because we wanted to focus on our chapel service. I think it was great! They were nervous at first, but I think they managed to shake the nerves off pretty well. I am so very proud of them!
Math: We took our math test yesterday, which means we finally close the door on multiplication for a little while. Some are excited for division, and others are not so excited. Either way, it is going to be fun! We will take baby steps together, and take our time with it. Reading: We are still spending time with theme, as some of them still show a few signs of not being able to identify it in a text. However, I feel very confident in our ability to successfully move on Friday. We are still working hard on our lit circle projects, and we are hoping to finish part 1 by the end of the week! :) We have taken a break from our stories that we have been working on in writing, but I am hoping to get back into those next week. We are also spending some time learning how to make predictions while reading, and learning how to use our comprehension skills. Skills such as, rereading, making connections, and asking questions. Social Studies: We took a giant step back, and decided to revisit communities. We are diving deep into the different types of communities, how they are different, and what they consist of. We are wrapping up our map skills, and will begin to focus on community jobs/helpers in the different communities that we are learning about. Science: They are really excited about the design process, and I am considering letting them use the process to build something. We've constructed many parachutes, and created simple machines, but I think we could make something different this time. We will take our science test tomorrow, and begin to plan for our field trip on Tuesday. I will be taking two chaperones, so if you would like to be a chaperone, please let me know. Quick Blurb from Mrs. Dennen: Starting next week the students will start to receive memory work that is related to the Christmas Eve program. It is very important that they have these things memorized. We will work on them in school, but they will also be expected to work on them at home as well. It will be a lot, as the service is not far away, but we know that they can do it. They work on the songs in music, and should have/will have a tune in their head, when we begin to memorize the songs. We will start with the Bible Verses that they are expected to remember. They will bring home a sheet for them to keep at home, and a copy will be kept here at school. If they lose their copy at home, it can be found on the school website, and I will have a digital copy on my website before the week is out. If you have any questions please feel free to let me know and I can try to get an answer for you! Important Dates:
ANOTHER WEEK DOWN! YAY! So far things are going pretty good in third grade. I am considering posting nightly homework on our class dojo story page. Would that be helpful? Let me know what you think.
Math: We have finished chapter three so we are getting ready for division! For some of us, that is scary, but we are also excited at the same time. We will review the chapter Friday and Monday before we take the test on Tuesday. I am thinking of doing the same thing I did for the quiz, where I ask them for questions, and use some of them on the test, and or as extra credit questions. They seemed to really like that idea on the quiz we took Friday. We will start division on Thursday. :) Reading: We are still focusing on theme, by using our knowledge of main idea, details, and predictions, to help us. Theme is still a little rocky so, we will spend some more time on it over the next week. We are still slowly working on our literature circle book projects. The goal is to have those in the final stages by November 15. As I said, this project is a project that will be done in the classroom. There is nothing they HAVE to do at home. Some have asked if they can do something, and I explained that they would have to talk it over with their parents. We are also entering the last stage for our fictional stories. I cannot wait for you guys to read them. They are very good! They ask for more writing days which make me very happy. Social Studies: We finished our chapter on celebrations, holidays, and traditions. We learned about very important holidays, and even found some that we really like. we are going to revisit communities and focus on the different types. We are going to look at rural, urban and suburban. We are also going to talk about the different types of jobs that can be found in these different communities. As we learn about communities, we are also going to work on our map skills. We will focus on the different parts of the map, what the map tells us, and how to properly use a map to find something or how to get somewhere. Science: We finished up our science chapter on technology and the design process. We will start preparing for our test, which will be Tuesday. We will also do a fun activity/experiment with the design process. Do to availability at the Museum and transportation, our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry will be Tuesday November 13. I notice will come out on Monday November 5 with all of the information that you will need! I am so excited for this trip! Religion: If you have the time, please come to chapel service Wednesday, November 7. We are in charge of chapel that day, and we something special planned! We are collecting cans and crackers for the Harmony Food Bank. So, we are requesting that everyone brings in cans and crackers for the cause. Along with that, we are putting on a play about being thankful. We are so excited and cannot wait for you all to see it. Important Dates:
