Memory Work: Psalm 46:10 --> Be still and know that I am God. I am exalted among the nations. I am exalted among the earth.
We had a pretty okay week last week. We struggled with being on task and focused, but we did okay. Friends are still in and out, including myself, with being sick, so unfortunately we are not free and clear just yet. So, continue to send in Clorox wipes for us to wipe down our desk and lunch tables. On March 9, we will be taking our walking field trip with 4th grade to see Dog Man: The Musical. If you have misplaced the form, you can find it on the home page of the website. The field trip is $10. Please return money and form no later than March 6. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Math: We are moving through topic 8, but we pausing to make sure that we are grasping the topics. We spent some time this week working with rounding and estimating. We watched a video that connected rounding and estimating. We learned that when trying to estimate sums, you need to round. We will spend some time this week also working with mental math, and the different strategies that we learned to solve equations. The mental math lessons were a little challenging, so before we move on, I want to make sure that we're all on the same page across the board. Science: We are moving into chapter 7, which is on Earth and Our Universe. In this chapter we will learn about stars and the different patterns that they have. We will learn about the planets in our solar system and the different moons. We will also spend some time learning about the things that cause daytime, nighttime, the seasons and shadows. Social Studies: We are wrapping up our in class projects and starting presentations for our BHM projects. I'm looking forward to seeing all of their presentations. Once we finish our presentations, we will move into reviewing for our BHM unit test. The test will either be next Friday or sometime late next week. Nonetheless. I will keep you posted, and we will have a study guide and jeopardy game to go along with that. Important Dates:

We are rocking and rolling in third grade! I am very proud of the progress they are making both individually and as a unit.
We are not out of the clear yet in terms of being sick, so please continue to send Clorox wipes. We wipe our desk down every morning and we wipe the lunch tables down after every lunch period. Thank you in advance. On March 9, we will be taking our walking field trip with fourth grade to see Dog Man: The Musical. The student should have brought the forms home last week, however, if you need another one please let me know. You can also find an extra copy on the website's home page. The field trip is $10. So, please return money and form no later than March 6. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Math: We wrapped up topic 7 and moved into topic 8. This topic should be easier as it is on addition and subtraction. However, we are looking at more than just addition and subtraction. We will work with properties, look for patterns, practice rounding and estimating, and try our hands at mental math. We will also look at inverse operations, place values, and compatible numbers. However, continue to have them practice their multiplication facts. The end goal is to have them fluent multiply between 0-10 by the end of the year. Science: We are wrapping up chapter 6. We spent some time last reviewing what we covered. We completed a practice test, and that went well. Today, they will play a review game using jeopardy. The jeopardy game will be emailed out to all of you as well so that they can study at home. Their science test will be Wednesday. Once we finish chapter 6, we will be moving into chapter 7, which is on space. We will be in chapter 7 till about spring break. Writing: Last week we spent some time working with sentences. We looked at run-on sentences, fragments, and the 4 different type of sentences. We will continue to look over these, but we will move into learning about subject and predicates along with simple and compound sentences. We are still working on our narrative pieces. We are all in different places, but the goal is to complete those by the middle of next week. We are working on adding detail and hooks to our writing to make it interesting and intriguing. My hope that this process is helping at home with the BHM project report. Social Studies: We spent some time last week learning some facts about black history, slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. We are now about to learn about some people that played an impactful/important part in history. They will also do some in-class research projects with a partner(s), on different people that will go up on our bulletin board. So, if you're ever up on the third floor, stop by the board to check out their posters. Important dates:
Third Grade Rocks! Let’s just yell that on top of the mountains. I am very proud of them!
Please continue to send snow pants and boots, as we will continue to go outside if the weather permits. A lot of friends are getting sick, so for an extra precaution, I have them wipe down their desk every morning. As a result of that and wiping down our lunch tables, we are running low on wipes. So, if you can, please send in cleaning wipes. On March 9, third grade will join fourth grade in a walking field trip to Dominican University. We will go to the theater to see Dog Man: The Musical. The students will have a field trip form in their Tuesday Folders. Please fill out the form and return in by March 2, 2020. Writing: I am really impressed with their narrative pieces. They are working hard with organizing their thoughts and finding how to glue them together. I am thrilled to see them add their personality and different hooks. This week, we will look at some examples of introductory paragraphs and work on that prewriting step. My hope is that this project is helping them at home as they work on their BHM report. Math: This week we will take our topic 7 test and move into topic 8. In this new topic, things should be a little easier. We will work with addition and subtraction. In this topic, we will learn the properties for addition and subtraction, and we will look at different patterns. We will learn how to properly round whole numbers and how to use that to help with mental math. They will also learn how use their knowledge of rounding to help with estimating. Science: We are wrapping up chapter 6. Starting Thursday, we will move into the review stage. As I said, a jeopardy game will be made to help them to study, and we will take our time with moving through the review process. I will put together a study guide for them and allow them to add different things that they think they will need to prepare for the test. Important Dates:
We had another great week! I am glad that we are having more of them. We will continue to work on team building as a way to strengthen their relationships, which is always an important thing.
Please continue to send snow pants and boots, as we still go outside. A lot of friends are getting sick, so for an extra precaution, I have them wipe down their desk every morning. As a result of that and wiping down our lunch tables, we are running low on wipes. So if you can, please send in cleaning wipes. Parent-teacher conferences are Thursday. They will be in the classroom this year. You can find a reminder of your time on their Tuesday Folders. If you have not signed up yet, I do believe you can email Mrs. Maggio to find out how to get a time as a link was sent out.. If you have any questions, please let me know. Reading: We have officially started out literature circles. The literature circles books tie in with Black History Month, and I am looking forward to seeing what they walk away with knowing/understanding. As I stated last week, literature circle homework will also be ASSIGNED on Monday and Wednesday and will be DUE on Wednesday and Friday. If you have any questions or concerns about literature circles, then please let me know. We are almost done with our read aloud of James and the Giant Peach. Upon finishing the book, we will watch the movie. I plan to do another read-aloud on the book, Escape from Mr.Lemoncello's Library. Writing: We are starting another writing project. We spent some time learning about the 6 different traits of writing and why they are important. We will work on narratives again, this time writing about someone who has helped us. We have spent some time working with some graphic organizers and narrowing down who we would like to write about. This will be an in class project, so they will not be expected to work on it at home. Math: We are wrapping up topic 7, which is the last topic in our first math book. We will begin to study for our topic 7 test tomorrow. The plan is for them to take the test Monday, February 10, so they will bring home their math books over the weekend. Continue to have them practice their math facts, giving extra focus to the numbers that cause them the most "stress." If they have mastered 0-10, then move on to 11 and 12. Maybe even start timing them to see how many they can crank out in 10 minutes, and then maybe 5 minutes. Social Studies: Due to February being Black History Month, we will pause our chapter 12 study and move into our Black History Unit. We will spend some time looking at the many people on the list that weren't chosen. We will do some small in class research projects where they get to create mini posters for our bulletin board of people that we are learning about. The first thing we will do is discuss the reason we have Black History Month and the way it started. We will also spend some time learning about different important events that impacted history. We will touch on slavery, but I will not go too in depth on it. I will keep the conversation and information given at their grade level. During our reading, technology and social studies period, I will dedicate some time for them to work on researching their person and working on their report. Important dates:
