Some friends are still wearing masks that are too big. Please make sure they are wearing the correct size mask. It should cover their noses and not fall off their faces.
Religion: We have wrapped up our religion unit and we are in the project phase. The goal is to have it done by Tuesday, as that is our last day before Thanksgiving break. Every year, third grade works with the church on a service project about hunger and helping those in need. Typically, we collect cans of food and donate them to the food pantry at Harmony Community Cares. This year, COVID gave us all a curveball. However, that did not stop us from putting something together. Instead of collecting cans of food, we will put together a gift bag that will be delivered to Harmony Community Cares. A list and a bag came home on Monday, and the bag does not have to come back till January 15. On the paper, it says to collect one of every item, but collect as much as you can. This will mean a lot to the homebound seniors. Math: We started topic 4 this week which is on division. We will spend a lot of time on this topic due to it being a harder topic. We will first iron out the relationship that multiplication and division have. Making that connection will help a great deal as we move deeper into the world of division. We learned fact families, and they are using those to cement their foundation. Continue to have them create fact families at home, as that will help them remember their facts. Similar to topics 2 and 3, we will learn how to divide factor by factor. Important Dates:

It has been a wild ride for the last couple of weeks, but I am back! This week will be a laid back week. I have a few friends with some missing assignments so, I want to give them time to get those things in. All missing assignments will need to be in by Monday, November 16. We are also covering new things, so we are doing a lot of things together.
Some friends are wearing masks that are too big, so just as a reminder, make sure they are wearing the correct fit. They should also have more than one mask at school, so please send extra with them to keep in their book bag or locker. Religion: We are wrapping up our hunger unit. It is typically in conjunction with the chapel service that we have. However, due to covid, we cannot be in the chapel. I feel the project component is a very important part of the unit, so we will still put together something to showcase what we've learned. I will record whatever the project is that we vote on and upload it to Google Classroom and Class Dojo. Math: We finished topic three on Friday, but we will not move into anything new until Monday. Topic four is on division, so I want to make sure that we are "solid" in multiplication before we move into division. This week, we’ve done a few interactive activities to practice the numerous strategies that we’ve learned. They can continue to practice those things at home also. We covered multiplying using repeated addition, using arrays, and using number lines. We also reviewed the five properties of multiplication: zero, identity, commutative, associative, and distributive. On Friday, we will do a small introduction into division, focusing on repeated subtraction. Reading: We are moving into a new unit which is focusing on working together to solve a problem. I love that this is the new unit focus as there is a struggle with group work right now. The focal points in this unit are making predictions, identifying themes, folktales, antonyms, long i and long u vowel sounds, and making plural words. We will take a deep dive into multiple themes as we read stories, both in the curriculum and outside of the curriculum. Social Studies: We finally finished chapter 1! In this next chapter, we are learning about economics. The big question is, "How do people get what they want and need?" On Friday, we took some time to do a small introduction to the main ideas of this chapter, such as goods vs. services and wants vs. needs. Within this chapter, we will learn about consumers and producers, imports and exports, and natural, human, and capital resources. Important Dates:
We’ve had a crazy, wacky time in third grade. Nonetheless, we powered through and we’re coming out on top!
While I have been away, there have been a few hiccups along the way. However, I am hopeful my talk with my friends about being nice, supporting each other, including each other, and being kind will stick. This has been an ongoing thing for us in third grade, so I hope things will iron themselves out. The memory work for the week is: Matthew 5:9 (Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be children of God.) Due November 10. Math: We are wrapping up our third topic in math. We are taking the rest of the week to review and go over the things on the test. Continue to have them practice solving equations using the distributive property of multiplication. We spent the last few days of the topic learning about the associative property of multiplication, so have them answer some problems that have three factors. Encourage them to use the distributive property to solve harder equations with factors they are still learning (3,4,6,7, 8, or 9). Our math test will be this Friday. Writing: We started our new unit on Friday, and they are pretty excited about it. Our new unit involves them explaining or teaching someone how to do something. On Friday, we took some time to talk about “How-to” essays (process essays), and what they need to have, and why we write them. We’ve also taken some time to look at a few examples. We have looked at four samples, and we saw things that we should do and things we should not do. Our "Hot-to" essay unit is going to be one of our lengthier ones, so we will spend a great deal of time working on these. There may be instances where they have writing homework as well. Science: We finished our first chapter! We started chapter 2 today, which is on Electricity and Magnetism. We are working on using charts to help us organize our thoughts as we go through the chapter. The first chart we are using is a KWL. We are practicing identifying what we KNOW and what we WANT to know. At the end of each lesson, we will write down the things that we LEARNED, so we can always have that to reference. To introduce the topic to them, we watched an episode of the Magic School Bus, where the class learns all about conductors, insulators, light bulbs, batteries, and electricity. They really enjoyed watching Mrs. Fritz and her students. As we move into the chapter, we will watch other videos and get some hands-on experience with some of the things we will learn. Unlike in chapter 1, the quest project will be one that they can build. Depending on how extensive it is, they may be able to do pieces of the quest project at home with the help of one of you!
