We are almost done! I do believe this is the last newsletter. I will send something small and simple next Tuesday but this the last "regular" newsletter. Our field trip is tomorrow. Please remind them to wear a Grace shirt and comfortable walking shoes. They will need to bring a sack lunch, something that will not need to be heated, and a water bottle. They can also bring a small bag that they can carry their lunch, and water bottle in. It will be 83 degrees so I would recommend them bring a hat and wear sunscreen. The chaperones are Mr. Hayley and Mr. Murphy. If you would like to go on the field trip with us, you will need to meet us at the zoo. If you have any other questions feel free to email me.
On the last day of school the students will bring home their 4th grade summer reading assignment, their promotional certificate, map scores and report card. Throughout the last week of school, the students will start to clean out their desk and cubby. I would recommend sending something extra on Wednesday for them to bring stuff home. Math: We are still cruising along in our journey to wrap up math. This week we are focusing on addition, rounding, and multiplying multiples of 10. The students expressed that the things we are doing now are easy and they wish the school year had started out like this. Our math test will be Tuesday of the last week of school. Reading: We are wrapping up the reading curriculum by focusing on comparing and contrasting along with expository text. Those are two things we covered a lot this year, so the students were pretty glad that the last full week is simple. Our essential question has us discussing why it is important to respect animals and how if you learn about animals you will respect them more. We were pretty excited to read about more animals as it is a good lead way to our field trip tomorrow. IN grammar we are still focusing on adverbs but we are more so focusing on the adverbs that compare. Science: We are technically done with the chapter, but we still have a little more to discuss. Thursday and Friday we will review the field trip, and finish up the chapter. Throughout the chapter, we have created our study guide, but we will go through it and create a simpler guide for them as we move into the test. Important Dates:

The year has gone by so fast.We are savoring these last days and making the best of our time together. Please be sure to check their Tuesday Folder as it contains their field trip information and permission slip. We are going to Brookfield Zoo on Wednesday, May 22. They will need to bring a sack lunch, something that they can carry and throw away once finished. They will all need a water bottle, and wear comfortable walking shoes.
The lower school musical is this Friday at 7pm. The students need to arrive at 6:30. At that time, they will come up to the classroom and wait for further instructions. I hope to see you all there. Math: We are embarking on our last math journey of the year. We are covering 4 topics at one time. We are wrapping up topic 7, before doing a little bit of 8,9, and 10. In topic 7, we are learning about bar graphs and picture graphs. On Monday, we learned how to read them. Today we learned how to create our own picture graphs, and tomorrow they will learn how to create their own bar graphs. They are having fun with it all, as it is a nice break from newer things. They are simply drawing, adding, subtracting, and multiplying, which are now easy for them. Our last math test will be the Tuesday of the last week of school. Reading: We jumped back into our reading curriculum this week and we will end our reading curriculum last week. The essential question for the week is, "why are goals important?" We spent the first day discussing the essential question and the goals that we set for ourselves. This week we are focusing on biographies, and we are going to read the two biographies on different people who impacted space traveling. In grammar we are focusing on adverbs, which are a little hard for some friends as they confused them with regular verbs. We are taking a break from writing this week, and we are still cruising through our read aloud book, A Night Divided. Science: We are staring chapter 8, which is on ecosystems. We will start off by learning exactly what an ecosystem is. We will then dive into learning about different kind of ecosystems, living and nonliving things inside of different ecosystems, and how ecosystems can change. We will wrap up chapter 8 with our field trip. The kiddos already love the chapter, and I'm sure they will love this field trip as well. Important Dates: 5/17: Musical @ 7pm (students must arrive at 6:30) 5/17: Hot lunch @ Concordia University 5/21: Permission slip due 5/22: Field trip to Brookfield Zoo The kiddos and I have started a count down. We have three Mondays's left which leaves us with 3 more weeks together. I'm sure they know the exact number of days with and without weekends but I am not that far yet. I am savoring the last days together! We take our last two map test this week, so this week is a rather lax week for us. Field trip information will go out next week. So, please be sure to check Tuesday Folders and the newsletter.
Memory Work: On May 10, they will recite refrain A from Goliath of Gath Refrain A: "He's big, he's scary He's ugly and he's scary. His ways are wicked and his words are rude. When he's through with you, There's nothing left to bury. He's six big cubits of attitude." Verse 1: His armor cost's a hundred pounds This monster man from Gath And you could fill his helmet up, And use it for a bath Verse 2: With nineteen pounds of deadly blade On a tree trunk for a spear, And shinguards made of solid bronze, He'll kick you through next year! Math: We finished the topic and have moved into the review stage. We started to review on Monday and took our math map test today. We will continue to review Wednesday and Thursday and take our test Friday. Time seems to still be a struggle for some friends, so we will continue to work on time as well. Reading: I decided to take a break from curriculum things since we are almost done with the book. Instead we worked on biographies, as we learned about them previously and we are getting ready to cover them again. Typically, with a writing assignment like this, the students are able to choose a person and research them. However, I decided to do something more simple, and have them interview their peers. To go along with the biographies, we will take turns drawing the people we interviewed, or I will have the students draw themselves. Along with the biographies we have started reading our book to wrap up the school year. After a certain amount of chapters, we answer discussion questions. We also spent some time watching videos and reading articles about the Berlin Wall and what is meant to Germany and why it is important that the wall went down. The students seem to love the book, but some of the girls do think the book is very sad. Science: We have wrapped up chapter 10, and just like math, we are moving into reviewing for the test. We will go over the practice test question answers, and began to create study guide to help them. We always play a review game the day before, so that we can prepare. I always ask them questions off of the test, with a little switch in the wording so they are never surprised. The science test will be Friday. Important Dates: 5/9: Reading Map Test 5/17: Musical 5/17: Hot Lunch at Concordia |
