We had another great week! I am glad that we are having more of them. We will continue to work on team building as a way to strengthen their relationships, which is always an important thing.
Please continue to send snow pants and boots, as we still go outside. A lot of friends are getting sick, so for an extra precaution, I have them wipe down their desk every morning. As a result of that and wiping down our lunch tables, we are running low on wipes. So if you can, please send in cleaning wipes. Parent-teacher conferences are Thursday. They will be in the classroom this year. You can find a reminder of your time on their Tuesday Folders. If you have not signed up yet, I do believe you can email Mrs. Maggio to find out how to get a time as a link was sent out.. If you have any questions, please let me know. Reading: We have officially started out literature circles. The literature circles books tie in with Black History Month, and I am looking forward to seeing what they walk away with knowing/understanding. As I stated last week, literature circle homework will also be ASSIGNED on Monday and Wednesday and will be DUE on Wednesday and Friday. If you have any questions or concerns about literature circles, then please let me know. We are almost done with our read aloud of James and the Giant Peach. Upon finishing the book, we will watch the movie. I plan to do another read-aloud on the book, Escape from Mr.Lemoncello's Library. Writing: We are starting another writing project. We spent some time learning about the 6 different traits of writing and why they are important. We will work on narratives again, this time writing about someone who has helped us. We have spent some time working with some graphic organizers and narrowing down who we would like to write about. This will be an in class project, so they will not be expected to work on it at home. Math: We are wrapping up topic 7, which is the last topic in our first math book. We will begin to study for our topic 7 test tomorrow. The plan is for them to take the test Monday, February 10, so they will bring home their math books over the weekend. Continue to have them practice their math facts, giving extra focus to the numbers that cause them the most "stress." If they have mastered 0-10, then move on to 11 and 12. Maybe even start timing them to see how many they can crank out in 10 minutes, and then maybe 5 minutes. Social Studies: Due to February being Black History Month, we will pause our chapter 12 study and move into our Black History Unit. We will spend some time looking at the many people on the list that weren't chosen. We will do some small in class research projects where they get to create mini posters for our bulletin board of people that we are learning about. The first thing we will do is discuss the reason we have Black History Month and the way it started. We will also spend some time learning about different important events that impacted history. We will touch on slavery, but I will not go too in depth on it. I will keep the conversation and information given at their grade level. During our reading, technology and social studies period, I will dedicate some time for them to work on researching their person and working on their report. Important dates:
