What a week! We have covered a lot in this first week. We learned routines, expectations, and even dived into our curriculum. I hope you have heard of the fun things we've done! Typically in the newsletter I will give a summary of how the week went, along with reminders at the very end.
Reading: We dived into the fantasy genre, and we are reading different stories that help us learn or discover something different. Along with that, we are practicing visualization, so we are paying close attention to details and descriptions as we read. Our spelling words for the week are review words and focus on the short a and i words. We will cover our grammar topics later in the week, which include sentence fragments, and the different types of sentences (statement, question, exclamatory and command). Math: We have started learning about multiplication. We are first learning it in the form of addition, before we slowly start to work with multiplication problems alone. That is scary for some of us but we are up for the challenge! Science: Chapter one focuses on the nature of science. This week we will cover lessons one and two, which focuses on what questions scientist ask and what skills do they use. We brainstormed some questions and had a awesome class discussion on how scientist investigate, observe, and analyze moon trees. We also drifted off into reading and looked at the different text features on the pages that could help us predict what topic the page would cover. Religion: We started religion by discussing our theme for the year, Ephesians 4:1-6. We focused closely on verse 2 and 4-5. In verse 2, it talks about the manner in which we should walk, "with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love." We discussed how this would look like inside and outside of our classroom. In verses 4-5, it talked about God, and he is ONE and we are apart of him, he is above us, in us and with us. Class dojo: The students are very excited about it and are anxious to earn enough points to trade in for dojo dollars and/or cash in for one of the rewards. So far the excitement has been for sitting at my desk and teaching a lesson. Other Information: Please join us for Curriculum Night this Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00pm. There will be two classroom sessions, 6:30-6:55 and 7:35-8:00 (You only need to attend one of these sessions). The general session will be at 7:00 and it will conclude around 7:30. This is a parent only event, and we will cover curriculum, classroom procedures (homework, behavior), and classroom volunteer opportunities. If you are unable to attend, a packet of information will come home in your child's Tuesday folder. Tuesday folders will come home every Tuesday, and they will have a white slip in the cover. On there, will be comments from be on behavior, memory work, and missing assignments. There is space for you to write back, but if you have nothing to write, please still initial the box. UPCOMING DATES: 9/3: Labor Day Holiday (No School) 9/7: First Hot lunch @ Concordia Cafeteria
