We had a rough week. We really struggled with following directions, being kind, and being respectful to others. We started this week off reviewing our classroom rules, talking about kindness, and bucket filling.
Reading: We are jumping back into our reading books. This week we are discussing how animals and people are unique. On Monday, we talked about the different things that make us unique. We are moving back into the realm of folktales. It was hard for us to think so far back to use prior knowledge, but they did good with their recall. We introduced plot, and discovered that the problem and solution of a story is what creates the plot. Challenge them to find the plot in the different stories that they read at home. We are also focusing on verbs this week. We will also spend some more time with synonyms and antonyms. We will do some contraction work and some r-controlled vowel sound work. The extra credit word for the week is Unique. Science: We are moving into our new unit, chapter 6. We are learning about the water cycle. We will also look at weather and climate and do a small project/activity about weather. We will also do an outside investigation involving dirt, minerals, rocks, soil, and sand. Social Studies: We are powering through our unit on the government. We are wrapping up the history and importance of government. We learned about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Once we are done learning about the "foundation" of the government, we will take a deeper look into how the government actually works. We will learn about our state government and the 3 branches of government. Our first social studies test will be the week after thanksgiving break. Math: We are slowly moving into topic 5. We will take some time to review topic 1-4 because topic 5 requires them to have a strong understanding of multiplication and division. In this topic they will learn what a multiplication table is, and how to use it. They will learn how to apply strategies when multiplying. By the end of this topic, they should be able to write, and solve multiplication and division word problems. This will probably be the most challenging topic they will have. Please continue to work on their math facts at home. Important dates:
