Third grade is cruising along! We are still working on following directions, actively listening, and staying on task. These are things that will work themselves out in time. We are still working hard to build a strong community. We will start doing some team building activities later this week and part of next week.
Walk-a-thon is quickly approaching. We are about three weeks out! It will be on Friday, October 2, 2020. It will be a half a day with dismissal being at 11:30 a..m. Please be sure to have them wear comfortable shoes and bring a reusable water bottle as we will walk just about 3 miles that day. Map testing will begin next week. I will send out the exact dates for those tests when I receive them. If you have any questions, please let me know. The memory verse that is due September 22 is Psalm 119: 11-12: I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes. Remote Wednesday Notice: Everything they will need to work on will be in their Wednesday folder or workbook. We will do everything together, so there will not be anything extra they will have to do. During the usual break periods, they should practice their math facts and study for their math test. I will provide them with a review game that they can play. They may also log onto Khan Academy to do some practice problems. They can now access Epic Reading. As of right now, they can only access it during school hours, so during one of their breaks, they can free read on Epic. The class code is tkt1947, and their pin in 2026. Reading: We are starting a new topic this week. We will spend the next two weeks talking about traditions. The essential question is “what can traditions teach you about culture?” We spent some time in class talking about different holidays that we celebrate and the different traditions we have with our families. With this new topic, we will spend some time with short e, o, and u vowel sounds, context clues, visualization, command & exclamatory sentences, and story sequencing. The genre focus is on realistic fiction. Writing: We will start our first writing unit on Thursday. We are going to work on Friendly Letters. On Monday, we talked about the importance of capital letters and commas in a friendly letter. We will spend two weeks in this unit. Math: We will wrap up the first topic on Thursday, which is the day of our math test. On Friday, we will move into topic 2, which will focus on multiplication. We are going to focus on multiples of 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. We will also learn new properties, identify, and zero property. During this topic, they should continue to practice their math facts, focusing on the multiples of 0,1, 2, 5, 9, and 10. Social Studies: We are going to try something different this year. We are going to try and do two units at once. We will continue to work on our social studies book unit, Our Environment. We are learning about the five regions of the world, their climates, natural resources, and how people have adapted to living in their environment. We will also move into our Hispanic Heritage Month unit. Unlike last year, we will not be able to do the 3rd/4th grade unit closing activity, but we will still get a chance to experience some of the things that we learned. During this unit, we will learn about some Spanish speaking countries. We will learn about their culture (food, dance, music), different traditions and holidays they have, and important figures.
